Film regulation and the BBFC

Watch this (slightly old) video outlining how videos are classified at the BBFC:

1) Research the BBFC in more detail: what is the institution responsible for? How is it funded? What link does it have to government?

The BBFC stands for British Board of Film Classification. It is funded through charged fees. The BBFC is what allows the films to be maintained in they are the people who make the sure the right film is shown to the right audience.

2) Read this BBFC guide to how films are rated. Summarise the process in 50 words.
The film is shown to 30 examiners that watch the film. They all love films and they need to have a interest in films. The film is sectioned in to 4 main issues. Sex and nudity, taste and decency, bad language and violence.

3) Read this BBFC outline of the issues faced when classifying a film. Summarise the debate in 50 words.

The issues faced when classifying a film could mean they get a backlash from the audience. They may get a lot of complaints if they do not agree with the rating that was given to the film.

4) Read this BBFC s
ection on controversial decisions. Why did The Dark Knight generate a large amount of media coverage regarding its certificate? Do you agree with the 12A certificate The Dark Knight was awarded?
The audience did not agree with the certificate that was given to them. They thought the violence was too much so it should have not be given that certificate.

5) What are the guidelines for a
15 certificate?
The guideline for 15 certificate is that you can only be 15 and over to watch the content in the film.

6) The BBFC website offers an explanation of every classification it makes and detailed case studies on selected titles. Look at the rating for Chicken and explain why it was given a 15 certificate.

The certificate given to Chicken was 15 and over because it had a lot of use of bad language, strong violence and sex references.
