Deutschland 83 has used a lot of methods to show realism. One of the ways Deutschland 83 has used a sense of realism is by the setting. In the East Germany it is poorer as most of the industrial things are in the West Germany. This means the East Germany people have more gritty and run-down buildings. This was clearly shown in the beginning, in the scene of the party when it is the Mother’s birthday. The director has shown a very good setting to show the conditions of the East Germany side. As when the protagonist goes in the building the audience can clearly see the building being very old and like it is ready to collapse in some areas. This clearly shows the sense of realism as in that period of time of the Cold war was still going on which is in the 1983. That is when the time period of the TV drama is set.

Another way that Deutschland 83 has shown a sense of realism is by showing the shortages of many things and showing the less traditional side of the people living in the East Germany. In the beginning during the birthday party scene it is clearly showing the young teenagers smoking and drinking. But if that was to be seen in the West Germany it would not be seen as very traditional and they could be seen as a bad person. However in the East Germany it is seen as normal. When the Mother opens up the cupboard when she is making her sister something you can clearly see the shortage of food. This creates a sense of realism as in the 1983 the East side of Germany did have a shortage of food supplies.

Capital’s first episode was released on ‘24th November 2015’. Capital’s director is Euros Lyn. Capital is about people’s life that has connection with Pepy’s Road.

Capital case study does show a sense of realism in their TV drama which is clearly shown by the setting as well. London is known to be a very good place to work at and the central of London is also known to have the best well known people working there. Capital Case study shows a character named Roger. Roger is a very workaholic person and just wants to keep going ahead in life. He works at a bank. He also wears a suit and tie in most of the beginning an episode shows he is very professional. Linking back to a sense of realism London is known to be a very busy city. This is shown in one of the shot of having a bird’s eye view of people walking around in a huge crowd because of everyone needing to go to work.

Capital Case study is known for their trains and the trains being packed. In one of the shots Roger is seen to be stuck in-between a group of people because of how packed it is. This linking back to the realism it creates a sense of personal identity for people who live in London. This is because most people in London have experienced this happening to them.

To conclude, I think both the TV dramas have shown that realism is a vital component of television drama to connect with the audience in a more effective.
